5 minutesIn December 2021, Invest-NL invested € 9 million in Umincorp for the construction of a new rPET factory in Rotterdam. Umincorp is taking the next step in high-quality plastic recycling from household waste streams. Jaap Vandehoek (founder and CEO of Umincorp), Reda Atibi (investment manager at Invest-NL), and Marlou Kortstee (investment associate at Invest-NL) share insights about this significant investment to enhance the circularity of plastics.
Umincorp is taking on the global challenge to make plastic packaging circular, with minimal CO2 emissions, aiming to minimise the impact on climate and environment and to preserve the livability of our planet for future generations. Jaap: “That is the mission of Umincorp. We are a diverse and innovative company with a “can do” mentality. We enjoy working with partners to achieve our goals, but when necessary, we also take independent action to break the status quo.”
The biggest challenge in recycling plastic from household waste is the sorting of the different plastic materials.

The biggest challenge in recycling plastic from household waste is sorting the different plastic materials. For this, Umincorp employs both existing and self-developed processes, of which the self-developed Magnetic Density Separation (MDS) is the most important step.
MDS involves separating plastics in the waste stream using a magnetic liquid. The MDS technology enables Umincorp to recover significantly more plastics than traditional sorting and recycling techniques. This increase is of great importance to the sector in meeting European recycling targets. Additionally, the process results in recovered plastics with higher purity. And the purer the recycled plastics, the better they can be used as raw material for new high-quality plastic products.
Jaap talks about the various streams: “We sort waste streams into pure raw materials for producers of plastic products such as packaging. These producers therefore use less fossil raw materials. In our factory in Amsterdam, we take in mixed plastic packaging waste, including PET trays that have so far been difficult to recycle. The material is separated, shredded, extensively cleaned, and sorted by type and, if desired, by colour. Due to our high recovery rate into circular-ready material and our low energy consumption per ton of product, we form the missing link in the transition to economic and sustainable circularity.”

For a long time, Invest-NL has been in contact with Umincorp. Reda: “Even before the official founding of Invest-NL, I approached Umincorp for an introduction.”
Reda explains that Invest-NL prefers to maintain contacts with companies that align with Invest-NL's focus areas: “We try, to get a good picture of the different markets, to get in touch with companies involved with innovative technologies AND that make a positive contribution to our sustainability goals. We knew that Umincorp owned an innovative technology with MDS and could thus make a significant contribution to the circular economy. Enough reason at the time for us to establish contact.” Marlou: “The contact has always been maintained until a few years later when a financing request arose for the scaling-up of Umincorp, which private financiers had not yet sufficiently addressed. Umincorp is going to expand its activities by building a factory where the rPET stream will be processed even further and with higher quality.”

Umincorp aligns well with the focus areas of Invest-NL because it has developed an innovative technology for a major societal challenge: high-quality processing of household plastic waste. This means Umincorp is focusing on the transition to a circular economy. Umincorp is also in a scaling phase; the technology has been proven but is being applied on an industrial scale for the first time.
Marlou: “That is risky and also requires significant capital. This combination of factors, plus the fact that Umincorp was founded by experienced entrepreneurs and there were professional co-investors involved, resulted in a good match with Invest-NL.”
What surprised me the most about collaborating with Invest-NL is that they are more hands-on and flexible than many commercial funds.
Jaap VandehoekFounder and CEO of Umincorp

Jaap has worked with multiple people within Invest-NL over the past 2.5 years. Jaap: “My overall impression of Invest-NL is positive. It’s a great mix of expertise. Former entrepreneurs, scientists, bankers supported by smart, ambitious, and eager-to-learn young people. What surprised me most about working with Invest-NL is that they are more hands-on and flexible than many commercial funds.”
After each investment, Invest-NL continues to work intensively with its portfolio companies. For example, Invest-NL contributed to the diversification of the newly to be established Supervisory Board (RvC) of Umincorp by proposing a female candidate with relevant market and technological knowledge as a member. Additionally, Invest-NL will remain involved as an observer of the RvC and contribute to the company's sustainability ambitions.
Reda: “Invest-NL will closely monitor Umincorp’s ambitions and will support Umincorp in optimizing ESG and impact policies.”
The transition to a circular plastic economy is a fascinating development.
Jaap VandehoekFounder and CEO of Umincorp
The transition to a circular plastic economy is a fascinating development, one that still requires many investments. This also applies to policy and regulation. Jaap: “There are still quite a few issues to resolve. For example: when will there be a clear obligation to produce packaging with a minimum percentage of recycled material for all polymer types? And will there be a tax on packaging made entirely from fossil-based plastics or not? When will the marketing departments of large multinationals overcome their fear to offer recycled packaging to customers? And so I could go on. All these questions cause cold feet among commercial investors and financiers. The long-term vision and support from Invest-NL can serve as a catalyst. Also for future projects.”
