Market development

Innovative enterprises looking to scale often encounter barriers that require more than just funding. Invest-NL can help address these bottlenecks with knowledge and expertise. For example, by developing the demand side or seeking collaboration within the supply chain.

A new ecosystem

Groundbreaking ideas do not become reality on their own. That is why Invest-NL possesses not only capital but also legal, technical, and market expertise. With our knowledge, we break through financing bottlenecks and assist in building a new ecosystem that directs capital towards the transitions. With the same goal, we seek collaborations within the chain, both nationally and internationally.

This is how we make change fundable.

How we approach this

We look at the market, map out financing hubs and tackle them. We are working on new solutions and forms of collaboration to initiate innovations and accelerate transitions.

1.

Research and advice

For certain markets, we indicate how their development can be accelerated. For example, we conducted research on the crucial role of shared facilities in scaling up biobased chemistry.

2.

Reviewing chains

We map out chains and their financial bottlenecks, and indicate what is needed to solve them. For example, we examined the Dutch textile chain and explored how we can stimulate and make a circular textile chain financially viable.

3.

Encouraging collaboration

We develop agreements that promote collaboration within supply chains so that risks can be shared. In this way, we have put together a toolkit for establishing energy hubs. This enables companies to jointly improve sustainability and share scarce grid capacity.

4.

Publishing knowledge

We promote investments in certain sectors by sharing publications and vision documents. Together with Wageningen University & Research, for example, we developed a framework on fermentation technology that allows investors to make better decisions.

5.

Bridging differences

We want to build a bridge between government policy and market opportunities, so that financing better aligns with policy objectives. We bring parties closer together, for example through financing tables. Policymakers, financiers, and entrepreneurs discuss their financing needs and try to formulate solutions.

Energy

Import of green hydrogen: a necessary and feasible complement to the energy transition

The import of green hydrogen via the port of Amsterdam offers a unique opportunity for the greening of sectors such as heavy industry, transport, and aviation. Although import in the initial years results in higher costs than benefits, it can become financially viable in the long term if targeted financial instruments and policy measures are implemented. This is evidenced by a case study conducted by Invest-NL, in collaboration with Port of Amsterdam, Ecolog, and Tata Steel.

Research by Invest-NL shows: cross-domain healthcare funding possible through a social business case

The future of Dutch healthcare is under significant pressure due to increasing demand for care and a severe shortage of staff. Invest-NL investigated how cross-domain networks in healthcare, which bring together care professionals from different sectors, can be funded. A social business case identifies all stakeholders and opens the door to collaboration and funding, which is crucial for a sustainable and affordable healthcare system.

Circular residual value of flex homes: a sustainable solution to an urgent problem

The Netherlands faces a significant and urgent housing construction challenge, with pressure on the housing market in many Dutch municipalities already being high for a long time. This pressure on accommodation highlights the need to speed up the building of homes. It increases the demand for a structurally adaptable flexible housing stock that can absorb fluctuations in demand and supply. Currently, however, flexible homes are often difficult to finance due to the temporary nature of a location. Research, carried out on behalf of Invest-NL, shows that the business case for flexible homes improves when the circular residual value is taken into account.

Agricultural transition requires circular minerals

Circular agriculture also involves circular nutrient flows. Innovative technologies for recycling minerals are under development, but laws and practical obstacles still prevent a viable business case, as revealed by a market survey from Invest-NL.

Sustainable technologies don't develop overnight, and often funding is a bottleneck. That is why we try to resolve the issues that hinder innovations.
