Agrifood
The Netherlands aims for a sustainable, climate-neutral, and future-proof food system. If we want to continue feeding everyone worldwide sustainably, we need to shift towards plant-based food and adopt a healthier approach to the land we cultivate.
A sustainable food system requires a shift towards the production and consumption of mainly plant-based proteins and other more sustainable ingredients. A transition to regenerative agriculture is also necessary, with sustainable water use and the restoration of biodiversity. We aim to achieve both goals by around 2050.
Our strategic choices
We invest in companies and promote sectors that develop innovative solutions for alternative proteins and more sustainable ingredients. Additionally, we support technologies and practices that restore soil quality, promote biodiversity, and make agricultural land more sustainable. At the same time, we invest in innovations that reduce water consumption and pollution, use land more efficiently, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Agrifood portfolio
We are proud of the companies we invest in and the funds we participate in. With these entrepreneurs and partners, we make an impact.
What do we focus on
We see great opportunities for enterprises and projects that contribute to making this important sector for the Netherlands more sustainable and strengthen its innovative capacity. Our focus is on ingredients, including the protein transition, and regenerative agriculture.
Protein transition
The shift from animal to plant-based proteins and other sustainable ingredients such as fats and oils is essential to improve sustainability, health, and the environment. Therefore, making food production more sustainable is high on our agenda.
Regenerative agriculture
Another way of farming is essential for restoring soil health, promoting biodiversity, and reducing environmental impact. That is why we are working to promote regenerative agriculture, focused on recovery and attention to the soil.

We want to make an impact. We do this within a number of strategic themes: Agrifood, Biobased & Circular Economy, Deep Tech, Energy, and Life Sciences & Health. See how we are taking steps together within these themes.
The Netherlands has set itself the goal of becoming a fully circular and bio-based economy by 2050. We focus on preventing overconsumption and waste, and restoring natural ecosystems. We collaborate on new financing solutions and invest in companies that contribute to a successful circular economy.
Our National Technology Strategy identifies ten technologies that are essential for our economic growth, national security, and addressing societal challenges. To succeed in this, significant investments are needed to help deep tech companies through the notorious ‘valley of death’. This is where our Deep Tech Fund comes into play.
To limit climate change, a significant shift from fossil fuels to sustainable technologies and energy sources is necessary. We aim for a completely CO₂-neutral and circular energy system by 2050. We are working on scaling up alternatives to fossil fuels, strengthening the economic structure through innovation, and promoting energy conservation.
The level of care in the Netherlands is high, but costs are rising and healthcare is not equally accessible to everyone. We focus on innovative businesses and initiatives that prevent, replace, and relocate expensive care. We develop models that make preventive care fundable and invest in the diagnostics and medical technology of tomorrow.
