Navigating the regulatory landscape on bioplastics

November 4, 2021

Plastics made from fossil fuels are a major source of pollution for oceans, animals and ultimately for ourselves. Bioplastics are being increasingly considered as an alternative for fossil plastics in order to reduce the use of raw materials, negative climate impact and litter. An important point here is that the development of these alternatives should not generate new or comparable climate or health problems. Extensive and often complex (European) laws and regulations are in place to guarantee the positive impact of bioplastics. This is why Ecomatters, on the instructions of Invest-NL, has mapped out the Dutch and European regulatory landscape so as to support start-ups, financiers, businesses and public bodies in their bioplastics activities. This report describes not only the conditions that must be fulfilled, but also the incentives that are available. It is an indispensable tool for businesses that want to market bioplastics.
