The opportunities and challenges for financing electricity storage

August 6, 2021

When it comes to the financing of electricity storage, there are two major investment barriers: market development uncertainty and the interconnectedness of the various electricity markets. There are multiple interdependent markets. In the energy transition, we derive more electricity from renewable sources, whose production cannot be controlled. To keep the system in balance, fossil-free, flexible capacity is needed to absorb all fluctuations. Battery systems, for example, can play a role in energy storage.

Together with consultancy DNV, Invest-NL has produced a white paper that includes several key conclusions for different parties, including developers and financiers. The white paper clarifies the interconnectedness of the markets and discusses the main developments in the areas of market, technology, regulation, and pricing on the major electricity markets. Flexibility is the guiding principle. By sharing insights from the white paper, we contribute to better financing options for energy storage systems.

What’s next? – Companies or financiers experiencing funding challenges in developing and investing in flexible business models can contact Invest-NL. We may be able to offer support and work together to find a financing solution.
