Invest-NL Invests in Smart Energy Storage with iwell

Invest-NL, together with Meridiam and other existing shareholders, is investing €27 million in iwell, a leading scale-up in smart energy storage systems. This investment will enable iwell to accelerate its growth and expand its battery storage and energy management solutions internationally.

iwell develops smart battery storage systems and energy management software for the commercial and industrial markets. These solutions are increasingly vital as electrification drives greater reliance on flexible energy sources such as solar and wind power. In the Netherlands alone, 12,000 companies are currently waiting for access to the electricity grid.

Relieving Pressure on the Electricity Grid through Smart Storage

iwell’s technology enables the storage of sustainable energy when it is abundant and inexpensive—such as during periods of high solar generation—and its use during times of high demand and cost. This helps businesses lower their energy expenses, relieve pressure on the electricity grid, and maximize the use of renewable energy sources.

"iwell plays a key role in building a more flexible and future-proof energy system," said Wouter van Westenbrugge, Senior Investment Manager at Invest-NL. "Their innovative technology enables companies to actively contribute to the energy transition, while also enhancing grid reliability and maintaining energy affordability."

This investment empowers iwell to take the next step in its development, with a strategic focus on international expansion, particularly in countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom, where grid congestion and demand for smart energy technologies are rapidly increasing.

Partnership with Strong International Investors

The investment round was led by Meridiam, an international infrastructure investor with an impact fund. By co-investing with Meridiam, Invest-NL advances its mission to support the international scaling of innovative Dutch scale-ups. Invest-NL is contributing €6 million to this investment round.
