Invest-NL is investing again in Dutch battery technology from LeydenJar

With a new investment in LeydenJar, Invest-NL is helping to bring Dutch battery technology to market. Thanks to this financing round, LeydenJar can complete its first commercial production site in Eindhoven and is expected to commence operations in 2027. This brings large-scale application of lighter, more powerful, and more sustainable batteries a step closer.

In total, LeydenJar raised € 13 million from investors, including Extantia and Invest-NL. Additionally, a major American electronics manufacturer is investing €10 million in specific production lines. The combination of public and private capital confirms confidence in the technology and its commercial potential.

From lab to factory

LeydenJar is developing a battery anode made of 100% silicon. Batteries with this anode offer up to 50% more energy density than traditional batteries, charge in less than 12 minutes, and are up to 85% less CO2-intensive to produce. Due to these properties, there is global interest from manufacturers of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and even aerospace applications.

With the construction of its production facility in Eindhoven, the company is now taking the step from pioneering lab work to industrial production. The factory is expected to be operational in 2027 and will be equipped with self-developed equipment for the production of ‘Silyte’, LeydenJar’s proprietary silicon anode.

Involved since 2021

Invest-NL was already involved in a previous funding round of LeydenJar in 2021. Evelien Bijl, investment manager at Invest-NL: “It is inspiring to witness LeydenJar’s development up close, from promising technology to a manufacturing company with global ambitions. We believe in the potential of their pure silicon anodes to transform the battery industry and are very excited about the strong commercial traction the company is already demonstrating.”

Batteries play a crucial role in the energy transition, but need to become lighter, more powerful, and cleaner. That is exactly what LeydenJar enables, which aligns well with Invest-NL’s mission to accelerate the transition to a CO2-neutral energy system.
