Invest-NL reaches milestone of € 1 billion in sustainable and innovative investments

Battolyser Systems is a Dutch cleantech scale-up developing a unique electrolyser (for green hydrogen production) with battery functionality (for energy storage). Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Beljaarts, stated: “This investment highlights the importance of Invest-NL as a driving force behind innovation and sustainability. By deploying these resources, Invest-NL also manages to attract private investors to support high-risk, groundbreaking innovations, which is good news for SMEs, employment, and the future earning potential of the Netherlands.”

As the national promotional institution, Invest-NL plays a key role in solving financing bottlenecks during transitions in energy, circularity, healthcare, agrifood, and deep tech. Since its inception in January 2020, 143 investments have been made in 50 companies and 43 investment and SME funds. Innovative companies such as Sif (wind energy), Avantium (biobased plastics), Vitestro (medical robotics), Mosa Meat (cultured meat), and Nearfield Instruments (chip technology) have received growth financing in recent years. These investments contribute to strengthening the innovation and competitiveness of the Netherlands.

In addition to attracting private capital, Invest-NL also develops guarantee and investment products with the support of the European Commission, such as through InvestEU. Invest-NL also focuses on mobilizing institutional capital, including that of pension funds. With innovative financial structures like blended finance, Invest-NL creates opportunities to provide high-risk, long-term financing: where the risks are significant, but the societal value in the long run is even greater.

CEO Rinke Zonneveld adds: “It is a major milestone for us as an organization that, four and a half years after our start, we have surpassed the € 1 billion mark in commitments. I am incredibly proud of all my colleagues who have contributed to this achievement. In the coming years, we will continue to invest in companies that make the Netherlands more innovative and sustainable. The additional capital we will receive from the new cabinet enables us to fulfil this role with even greater impact.”
