Investing in green storage for green power

Green energy storage plays a pivotal role in the transition to a sustainable energy system. With the growing integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, the need for reliable energy storage becomes increasingly critical to accommodate the variability in energy production. We are pleased to announce that AQUABATTERY, a leading Dutch startup in long-duration energy storage, has successfully closed an investment round of € 6 million, with Invest-NL participating with € 1.5 million.

This funding, led by EIT InnoEnergy along with co-investors such as InnovationQuarter and Invest-NL, provides seed financing to AQUABATTERY in their mission to realize affordable and sustainable energy storage on a large scale. Long-duration energy storage, as developed by AQUABATTERY, offers a solution for safely storing energy over extended periods, which is essential for ensuring the reliability and stability of the power grid.

AQUABATTERY's innovative technology, which utilizes non-scarce and non-toxic materials such as water and table salt, represents a breakthrough in green energy storage. This technology not only offers an environmentally responsible choice but also a cost-effective approach to long-duration energy storage, crucial for resolving grid congestion and accelerating industrial decarbonization.

Our investment in AQUABATTERY underscores Invest-NL's mission to support entrepreneurs with solid plans that accelerate the transition to a sustainable society. This aligns with our strategy to finance innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable world.

Bram Sprangers, investment manager at Invest-NL, stated, “The energy transition will significantly benefit from innovative solutions like those of AQUABATTERY. Long-duration energy storage will undeniably play a vital role as a cornerstone for the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity grid.”

For this investment, the ROM Range Extender is deployed, involving close collaboration with regional development companies.
