Towards a sustainable future with bioplastics thanks to the National Growth Fund

With the announcement last Friday of the funding for the Biobased Circular program, we are taking significant steps towards climate-neutral biobased plastics in the Netherlands. Over the next eight years, we will create new production chains for packaging, construction materials, textiles, and coatings, among others. The best part? We are bidding farewell to fossil resources and embracing plant-based sources for these products. It's a true win-win situation: a carbon-neutral material cycle and a strong international economic outlook for the Netherlands.

Invest-NL actively contributed to the development of this funding application. Furthermore, Invest-NL assessed the financial feasibility of the major projects within this application. And importantly, we see the future of biobased materials as a genuine necessity for a sustainable future. We have already invested in Avantium, one of the partners in the consortium. We also collaborate closely with partners such as Paques Biobased, Relement, and other startups and scale-ups, including those in the Green Chemistry Accelerator.

Role of Invest-NL in the National Growth Fund program

Invest-NL has been asked by the National Growth Fund to play a crucial role in the allocation of funds to the BioBased Circular program. Together with the consortium, we are developing financing models that optimize the utilization of the granted subsidy. This provides opportunities to combine subsidies, loans, or an investment from Invest-NL itself (known as "blended finance"). It is a challenging new responsibility that showcases how Invest-NL helps finance the future of the Netherlands!
