Invest-NL is leading a €16 million investment round in Thorizon, a Dutch deep-tech startup developing advanced modular molten salt reactors.
Invest-NL contributes € 10 million and makes use of the InvestEU guarantee scheme from the European Commission for the research component. Additionally, Thorizon recently received € 4 million in subsidies from the Province of North Brabant, bringing the total funding to € 20 million.
This investment supports the further development of Thorizon One, an innovative reactor that uses long-lived radioactive waste and thorium as fuel. Thorizon One is designed to make nuclear energy safer, more cost-effective, and quicker to deploy than conventional reactors. This technology contributes to a CO₂-free energy supply and reuses nuclear waste as fuel.
Nuclear energy can play an important role in the energy transition, alongside renewable sources such as wind and solar, which are weather-dependent. Thorizon’s molten salt reactor technology offers a promising prospect to enhance Europe’s energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By investing in Thorizon, Invest-NL contributes to the development of a scalable, sustainable energy solution that helps both the Netherlands and Europe achieve their climate objectives.
"We are pleased to support Thorizon in this next phase, in which the first non-nuclear cartridges for their modular molten salt reactor are built and tested," says Reda Atibi, Senior Investment Manager at Invest-NL. "Since our initial investment in 2022, the team has grown, strengthened its expertise, and achieved significant technological progress. Collaboration with Dutch and French regulators has been intensified, and crucial partnerships have been formed to accelerate development. These milestones have further increased our confidence in Thorizon, enabling us to lead this investment round."
With this investment, Thorizon makes an important step towards realizing Europe’s first molten salt reactor. The company will further develop the reactor, go through licensing processes, and build prototypes, with the aim of starting the construction of the first reactor around 2030.
