Invest-NL highlights financing needs for regenerative agriculture

The transition to regenerative agriculture not only requires changes on the farm, but also financing to make that shift possible. That is where an important challenge still lies today. Invest-NL is therefore working on better understanding of the costs involved in the transition and the funding needed to help agricultural entrepreneurs become future-proof.

The transition to regenerative agriculture requires not only change on the farm but also financing to enable that shift. That remains a significant challenge today. That is why Invest-NL is working on gaining better insight into the costs associated with the transition and the financing needed to help agricultural entrepreneurs become future-proof.

Analysis of the financial gap

To make this possible, Invest-NL is collaborating with Wageningen Social & Economic Research to analyse the financing gap during the transition to regenerative agriculture. This analysis identifies which definitions, indicators, scenarios, and financial models are necessary to better understand the costs and benefits of the transition. Additionally, there is still a lack of systematic insight into the financing requirements during the switch.

This insight is essential. Regenerative agriculture offers prospects for addressing issues related to soil quality, biodiversity, water, and climate. At the same time, the change often requires investments in new technologies, adjustments in farm management, and flexibility to absorb temporary income losses. Until clear understanding is achieved about the costs, risks, and financing needs involved, large-scale adoption remains difficult.

Towards a concrete financial model

The analysis carried out is a first step in a broader process. In the next phase, Invest-NL aims to develop a detailed financial model of the financing demand. This will clarify which forms of capital are suitable for different aspects of the transition, such as investments, working capital, risk sharing, and other financing options. Gradually, this will create a foundation that better reflects the realities faced by entrepreneurs and contributes to a sustainable agricultural system.
