Invest-NL is committed to a CO₂-neutral and circular economy, with the energy transition and biodiversity as key pillars. Making industrial areas more sustainable is an important step in this process. Besides reducing CO₂ emissions, increasing sustainability in industrial areas also offers opportunities to improve local biodiversity. Invest-NL, together with PVB Nederland, Rebel, and the Nature and Environment Federation South Holland, has developed a brochure that helps industrial areas combine smart solutions. By approaching sustainability across various areas (energy, biodiversity, and climate adaptation) as a single integrated business case, broad sustainable development of industrial areas becomes (financially) feasible and even accelerated.
The Netherlands has more than 3,500 business parks. When all these sites are thoroughly sustainable, they can make a significant contribution to the national climate objectives. The developed brochure provides practical guidance on making smart combinations of solutions that not only save energy but also improve the working environment and increase the economic value of the sites. Think, for example, of combining solar panels with green roofs and planting trees strategically.
The insights help site managers, companies, and policymakers to take steps towards a future-proof and nature-inclusive working environment. By linking the energy transition to nature measures, business parks become more attractive and resilient. This contributes to faster sustainability and offers broader societal benefits.
