Investment in Mosa Meat: Cultivated meat as a sustainable alternative

Invest-NL is committed to a sustainable and innovative Netherlands. We are in the midst of a major transition towards a sustainable and circular society. Traditional livestock farming is known for its negative environmental impact. This morning, it was announced that Invest-NL is investing € 10 million in Mosa Meat, a pioneer in the production of cultivated meat.

Mosa Meat aims to provide a sustainable and ethical alternative to conventional beef by producing cultured meat on a commercial scale. The company focuses on reducing environmental impacts such as greenhouse gases and land use, and improving animal welfare by offering an alternative to traditional livestock farming, aiming to replace it in part. The technological innovations Mosa Meat is developing are intended to enable scaled production of cultured meat at competitive prices. Moreover, Mosa Meat is one of the few in the market to do so without using genetic modification, which greatly benefits the approval process in various markets and consumer acceptance.

The investment round, totaling €40 million, is led by Lowercarbon Capital and M Ventures. Other investors include LIOF, the Limburg Regional Development Agency, and the Limburg Energy Fund. Invest-NL’s investment is backed by a 50% guarantee from InvestEU, a program of the European Commission. Invest-NL serves as the implementing partner for the InvestEU program in the Netherlands.

Cultured meat is still in the early stages of development. The costs of cultured meat are currently high, and the production volumes are low. Additionally, the consumption of c meat is not yet permitted in most countries, except in Singapore and recently in the United States. In the Netherlands, it has recently become allowed to organize tastings, making it the first country in Europe where this is possible.

Victor Meijer, senior investment manager at Invest-NL: "With our investment in Mosa Meat, we are taking a significant step forward in the transition to a more sustainable food industry. We are proud to support Mosa Meat in this phase. Not only does the use ofculturedmeat significantly reduce the ecological footprint of meat production, but it also improves animal welfare and innovates our food system. Thanks to the InvestEU guarantee, the risk of the investment is reduced, enabling additional financial support."
