Scaling up protein from microalgae: innovative opportunity for sustainable food

The Dutch agri-food sector is known for its efficient food production. However, meeting environmental and climate agreements, as well as the increasing demand for food and other agricultural products and raw materials, requires innovative and sustainable production methods. Microalgae can play an important role in this transition. They are rich in proteins and minerals that are not only nutritious, but can also be produced sustainably.

Phycom has developed a unique technology for the large-scale production of microalgae. Phycom will further develop this technology for the isolation of valuable nutrients such as proteins, fatty acids and fibers from microalgae. Today it was announced that Invest-NL is contributing €2 million to an investment round to make this possible, among other things. The total investment round amounts to more than €9 million and consists of contributions from both existing and new investors, including Invest-NL.

Microalgae form the basis of the marine food system and can, for example, serve as an ingredient for meat or fish replacement products for human consumption. In this way, steps are skipped in the food chain sustainably and efficiently. Microalgae have a unique composition of not only proteins, but also fatty acids, fibres, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They provide a sustainable food solution that requires limited land, water and energy, without the need for pesticides, antibiotics or preservatives.

Daan Meijer, investment associate at Invest-NL: "Invest-NL aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable food system, including by investing in innovative technologies for alternative proteins. The role of microalgae in the food transition, combined with Phycom's unique technology and targeted production capacity, makes us extremely proud to add Phycom to our investment portfolio.
