Investment in Eyeo takes camera technology to the next level

Eyeo is developing a technology that makes image sensors up to three times more sensitive to light. This breakthrough could transform devices such as smartphones and security cameras. The Deep Tech Fund of Invest-NL is investing €5 million to help scale this innovation in the Netherlands.

This investment is part of a €15 million seed round, led by imec.xpand and Invest-NL, with participation from HTGF, Bom and Qbic. The funding will be used to develop an evaluation kit, scale up manufacturing processes and expand commercial partnerships to bring the technology to market.

Three times more light

Conventional image sensors use colour filters to distinguish red, green and blue pixels. These filters block light particles (photons) in all other colours, resulting in a loss of around 70 percent of available light. This directly impacts image quality.

Instead of filtering light, Eyeo’s technology splits it, allowing nearly all photons to reach the correct pixel. This results in sharper images, even in low-light conditions, and enables smaller sensors. These advantages are essential for security cameras, which often operate in poorly lit environments, and for smartphones, where the camera module is a key factor in consumer choice.

Dutch innovation with global impact

Eyeo is a spin-out from the research institute imec and established its presence in Eindhoven in early 2025. Invest-NL is supporting the company through the Deep Tech Fund because of the disruptive nature of the technology and its strategic importance for the Dutch high-tech ecosystem. The potential impact is significant: improved camera technology with reduced material use and a boost to the photonics and semiconductor sectors in the Netherlands.

“Eyeo is working on disruptive innovation in the image sensor industry. As the Deep Tech Fund, we aim to accelerate precisely these kinds of key technologies. We are proud to support this company in its development,” says Bart van Campenhout, Investment Manager at Invest-NL.

Breakthrough in key technologies

The investment in Eyeo strengthens the Netherlands’ position in photonics and the semiconductor industry. These are both crucial key technologies within the National Technology Strategy. Significant investment is needed to help deep tech ventures bridge the so-called valley of death. With this investment, the Deep Tech Fund is actively stepping into that role.
